Complete Timing Solution Enables Next-Generation LTE Services

Cairo, Egypt. March 7, 2017. Oscilloquartz, an ADVA Optical Networking company, today announced that Orange Egypt has deployed its OSA 5421 as part of a complete synchronization solution. The advanced Precision Time Protocol (PTP) grandmaster clocks will distribute and assure accurate timing throughout the nationwide network. The new end-to-end synchronization solution also meets stringent phase and frequency requirements necessary for Orange Egypt’s widespread deployment of Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) capabilities. This will enable the country’s leading mobile service provider to offer 4G services to its mobile customers as well as better quality SLAs to enterprise clients.

In October, Orange Egypt became the first mobile operator in the country to acquire a license to operate 4G services. Not only does it deliver the accurate phase and frequency information required for Orange Egypt’s 4G offerings but, with assisted partial timing support and a high-end quartz oscillator, it also provides extended holdover performance in case of GNSS outages. The 60,000km infrastructure is being constructed by a consortium led by Himachal Futuristic Communications (HFCL). The enormous greenfield transport network, referred to as Network for Spectrum (NFS), will play a critical role in serving the communication needs of India’s defense forces. Demonstrations Will Highlight New Functionalityfor Improved Accuracy, Reliability and Cost Efficiency

Prague, Czech Republic. October 26, 2016. Oscilloquartz, an ADVA Optical Networking company, announced today that it will showcase vital new functionality for its synchronization and distribution technology at the 2016 International Timing & Sync Forum (ITSF) in Prague. Demonstrations will reveal additional applications based on enhanced hardware and software in the OSA 5401 Syncplug, an ultra-compact Precision Time Protocol (PTP) grandmaster clock, and the OSA 5420 range of synchronization distribution and assurance devices optimized for edge deployment. The new feature set includes the OSA 5401’s capability to be used as a boundary or slave clock and the OSA 5420 series’ availability as a one-box solution for all timing protocols. The advancements will improve accuracy, security and cost-efficiency and create new use cases and deployment scenarios for Oscilloquartz’s timing technology.

“With these latest innovations we can offer the ultimate timing solution. Thanks to improved security and resiliency, as well as different PTP profiles for different markets, our technology now caters for all synchronization requirements,” said Nir Laufer, director, product line management, Oscilloquartz. “Our enhanced OSA 5401 small form-factor pluggable grandmaster will bring major benefits to network operators. Its new slave and boundary clock functionality enables it to be used as an add-on, creating a hybrid synchronization network. Deployed this way, the OSA 5401 significantly reduces packet delay variation while taking up zero real estate and using very little power. It also protects against outages in the global navigation satellite system (GNSS), delivering superior frequency and phase with better resiliency throughout the network.”

Further enhancements to the OSA 5401 include Layer 3 multi-cast functionality for financial and enterprise applications, as well as remote authentication and logs for improved manageability and security. Improvements have also been made to the OSA 5401’s GNSS capabilities, such as an elevation mask, a signal-to-noise ratio mask and fixed positioning, which enables more accurate time and frequency recovery, even in challenging environments such as urban canyon installations. Upgrades to the OSA 5420 series mean that it can now function as a high-capacity Network Time Protocol (NTP) server or PTP grandmaster in the same device, or even over the same port. What’s more, it can now support different types of line cards, including multiple 1Gbit/s ports used for PTP, NTP and Sync-E, as well as BITS, pulse-per-second, time-of-day and clock interfaces. This single box for all synchronization applications dramatically reduces cost and enables customers to protect their investment in NTP while planning future migration toward PTP.

Oscilloquartz, an ADVA Optical Networking company, announced today that ASTRID has deployed the OSA 5411 in a new synchronization network built by Arcadiz Telecom. ASTRID, the operator of Belgium’s national emergency services communication network, chose to anchor its transport infrastructure with the OSA 5411 access device. The OSA 5411 features rubidium-based timing and synchronization capabilities along with a unique holdover algorithm. The new synchronization solution has been seamlessly integrated with ASTRID’s existing optical transport network. It will ensure stringent requirements for timing accuracy are met across all regions of the country.

Built on OSA 5411 synchronization distribution and assurance technology, ASTRID’s new end-to-end timing solution will ensure the delivery of precise frequency, phase and time-of-day information across all 10 provinces in Belgium. The OSA 5411, the newest member of the OSA 5410 series, is the first access network device in the industry to provide rubidium-based timing and synchronization capabilities along with an advanced holdover algorithm. This provides much longer frequency and phase holdover in the event of GNSS outages. The synchronization solution also configures easily with ASTRID’s existing transport infrastructure, which is built on the ADVA FSP 3000.

The innovative device has the smallest footprint and most compact design on the market. It complements the existing portfolio of Oscilloquartz products, driving precise IEEE 1588v2 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) frequency and phase synchronization as well as Synchronous Ethernet deeper into access networks, including radio access and small cell networks. With its miniature form factor and low-touch provisioning, the new synchronization solution can be deployed in the most space-restrictive environments. What’s more, it operates at low cost, consumes minimal energy and requires no additional power source or real estate. The OSA 5401 Syncplug™ supports the creation of an entirely new time distribution architecture to meet the stringent phase-synchronization requirements of today’s access networks.

The OSA 5401 Syncplug™ is the first new product to be jointly engineered by Oscilloquartz and members of the recently acquired Time4 Systems. It easily conforms to all relevant PTP telecom profiles and, when locked to global navigation systems, meets the stringent requirements of G.8272 and G.811 specifications. The device functions as a Synchronous Ethernet source, GNSS receiver and a grandmaster clock. It can support both Layer 2 and Layer 3 PTP transport and is capable of unicasting and multicasting simultaneously. Advanced design and network redundancy techniques provide resiliency against local GNSS jamming. It also boasts an impressively wide operational temperature range of -40 to 85 Celsius. But the key benefits that the OSA 5401 Syncplug™ provides are space and energy efficiency for significant savings in installation and engineering costs. It also fully complies with multi-source agreements for total interoperability.

Enhanced Holdover Performance and High Remote Slave Capacity Enable Timing in the Access Network

Oscilloquartz, an ADVA Optical Networking company, today launched the OSA 5420 series, a family of advanced grandmaster clock synchronization devices engineered for excellent performance even in the most extreme conditions. The pioneering product range delivers the best holdover performance on the market despite its compact footprint. This is achieved with a built-in sync distribution unit, sophisticated algorithm and high-quality oscillator. With capacity for up to 512 remote slaves, the OSA 5420 also represents an enormous increase in scale. It enables timing to be distributed and assured throughout the network over existing packet infrastructure and meets stringent frequency and phase synchronization requirements. With its self-calibrating clock recovery algorithm, the OSA 5420's Precision Time Protocol (PTP) implementation supports accurate phase and time delivery for a wide range of applications, including mobile backhaul and enterprise services.

The OSA 5420 series is a major leap forward in terms of capacity. The number of remote clocks that can now be supported has increased to meet the needs of synchronization network architectures with devices often installed at the edge of the network. It provides a new level of flexibility thanks to multiple legacy and next-generation physical synchronization interfaces that fan out for up to 32 outputs. The OSA 5420 also expands PTP and Synchronous Ethernet (Sync-E) capabilities as each unit can handle up to 12 PTP/Sync-E interfaces. The devices come complete with a built-in GNSS receiver and can be configured to operate in grandmaster, assisted partial timing support, and boundary or slave clock modes. Oscilloquartz, an ADVA Optical Networking company, announced today that TDC has deployed its OSA 3230B cesium clock in its national optical transport network. The technology provides phenomenally precise measurement reference with accuracy 10 times better than ITU-T recommendations. TDC, the leading telecommunications provider in Denmark, has already deployed Oscilloquartz timing and distribution solutions to meet strict accuracy requirements for frequency, phase and time-of-day information delivery. Now it’s leveraging the frequency-source technology for a stable and accurate reference signal entirely free from frequency drift. Oscilloquartz is supporting TDC in all areas from the new cesium-based primary reference source to the OSA 5548C synchronization supply units for phase and frequency regeneration.

Oscilloquartz, an ADVA Optical Networking company, announced today that it has acquired Time4 Systems to help it capitalize on new synchronization opportunities. Based in Finland, Time4 Systems produces SFP-based pluggable clock devices that drive synchronization deeper into the access network. With these mini-clock devices, Time4 Systems changes the way network synchronization is provided via global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers, telecom slave clocks (T-SCs), grandmasters (GMs) or boundary clocks (BCs). This new product is the first access network device in the industry to offer Rubidium-based timing and synchronization capabilities along with a unique holdover algorithm. This technology breakthrough will enable much longer frequency and phase holdover in case of GNSS outages. The OSA 5411, and the wider OSA 5410 series, also support the latest ITU-T G.8275.1 standard. Both of these factors are critical for the successful migration to LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) and LTE-TDD networks. The OSA 5411’s capability to be either a grandmaster clock, a boundary clock, a slave device or a sync probe presents MNOs with a highly capable 1U timing and synchronization unit. With the product’s support of the ITU-T G.8275.1 and G.8265.1 PTP telecom profiles, MNOs can actually push the grandmaster functionality much closer to the access network. By doing this, MNOs don’t need to upgrade the entire core network as they migrate to LTE-A or LTE-TDD but only the access network. This functionality could have profound budgetary implications.

Oscilloquartz, an ADVA Optical Networking company, today achieved an industry milestone with the launch of the OSA 5335 Modular Precision Time Protocol (PTP) Grandmaster. This is the first product of its kind to feature a modular design and extreme scalability at the same time. The OSA 5335 can support from 128 to over 3,000 remote PTP clients at 128 packets per second (PPS) - something that has never been achieved before. This new class of product will prove critical for mobile network operators (MNOs) that are deploying LTE-FDD networks today and are seeking to migrate to LTE-TDD and LTE-Advanced in the most cost effective and scalable way possible. Fully compliant with IEEE 1588v2 standards and the latest versions of ITU-T Precision Time Protocol (PTP) profiles, the OSA 5335 will be launched at the International Telecom Sync Forum (ITSF) 2014 and is commercially available today.

“What we’ve achieved with the OSA 5335 isn’t simply an upgrade or an enhancement, it’s something radically new, something the industry has never seen before. It’s an entirely new approach,” said Gil Biran, general manager, Oscilloquartz. “By introducing a modular design to Grandmaster clocks, we’re showing the industry that there’s a better way to deliver precise and reliable frequency, phase and time-of-day information. It’s a more scalable way. It’s a more efficient way. The impact here will be enormous. The OSA 5335 can support over 3,000 remote PTP clients. This is a huge figure and something that’s never been possible, at least not until now. And when you combine this hardware with our scalable sync management software, you have something truly unique.”

The associated reduction in provisioning, operations and maintenance needs are significant… The OSA 5335 has been built from the ground up for the distribution of frequency, phase and time synchronization over packet-based networks. It provides software license based high-client capacity and a broad range of redundancy options for maximum scalability and redundancy. The OSA 5335’s modular design ensures that it can be configured to a MNO’s exacting demands, including the use of two Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), supporting local variations such as GPS and GLONASS. Delivery of such precise synchronization enables MNOs to meet rigorous Stratum 1 requirements without the need to install and manage external receivers or Cesium reference clock sources. The associated reduction in provisioning, operations and maintenance needs are significant, both from a cost and labor perspective.

The quality of service (QoS) provided by modern telecommunications can only be guaranteed if the networks are well synchronized. Since the introduction of packet switched networks, new synchronization technologies such as Synchronous Ethernet and Precision Time Protocol (IEEE 1588) have been introduced. They play a vital role in the operation of mobile networks.

Oscilloquartz is holding a training course on network synchronization. The course is divided into two parts, a theoretical part (seminar) and a practical part (workshop). During the seminar, synchronization theory is presented in a vendor-neutral way. The workshop allows participants to become familiar with Oscilloquartz products and to discuss operation and maintenance aspects with experts and peers.

This year’s Bienne event was held on May 26th to 28th with a successful attendance of participants from 5 continents. On our time off, we had the chance to visit Berne, the capital of Switzerland. Everyone was then invited to dinner in a beautiful place in Berne, called “The Kornhauskeller”. The Kornhauskeller is one of the most magnificent dining room of Switzerland and the dimensions of the room are an impressive experience. The center and side aisles, which resemble church architecture, lend the Kornhauskeller a sacred grace. A unique room, which invites you to enjoy the atmosphere in the restaurant.

The survey was conducted across the globe and polled participants from major MNOs. The results will be shared on Wednesday, June 11th at 0925 PDT by Gil Biran in one of three speaking sessions being held by Oscilloquartz, an ADVA Optical Networking company and the group's center of excellence for timing distribution and assurance. The results of the survey will be made publically available on Thursday, June 12th.

The Swatch Group Ltd and ADVA Optical Networking SE today announced that ADVA Optical Networking SE has acquired all shares of Oscilloquartz Ltd., based in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in early April 2014. Further terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed.

Founded in 1949, Oscilloquartz designs, manufactures and installs the most precise frequency sources and synchronization systems supplied to telecommunication integrators as well as public and private network operators in more than 90 countries. Headquartered in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, the company has approximately 70 employees. The company will be maintained in the region of Neuchâtel.

Close to 100 participants were interested mainly about IEEE 1588 based solutions. All transport network designers are faced with the evolution towards the IP based infrastructures, but few experiences are available yet about such solutions. The seminar shared recent professional experiences of synchronization with PTP technology in general and operational results after deployments.

Oscilloquartz is highly involved in Russia and surrounding countries and the presentations were followed by great interest of the participants.

Moscow Technical University of Communications and Informatics (MTUCI) is the major educational and scientific center for training and retraining of highly skilled specialists in the field of telecommunications, informatics, radio engineering and economics.
