With packet-based synchronization using the IEEE 1588 protocol, synchronization performance often depends on time varying factors such as traffic load. These factors show not only day-to-day periodic variations, but also unpredictable long-term evolution due to slow changes in the usage of the network by end customers. In scenarios such as this one, permanent in-service performance monitoring is able to reveal slow changes in synchronization quality. By analyzing the results, appropriate actions at the network level, like traffic engineering, can be taken in order to assure a constant synchronization quality over time, similar to a control loop.
This presentation by Dominik Schneuwly and Kenneth Hann shows how automated monitoring based on measuring in sample network sites can reduce the quantity of measurement data needed and how the method can help to display results in an accessible way for the user.
