Satellite sync
Reliable network timing delivered by signals from the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) is a critical component of many services we now take for granted. It’s the foundation of network timing in sectors ranging from power utilities through to broadcast networks. Telecommunications networks too would be significantly less advanced without GNSS-based synchronization. It provides a highly accurate source of time, keeping all parts of the network in sync and enabling operational efficiency. Without it, many advanced LTE-A and 5G services and applications simply wouldn’t be possible.

End-to-end synchronization
GNSS satellites deliver accurate time to IEEE 1588 PTP grandmaster and NTP server clocks equipped with GNSS timing receivers, which then distribute the information across the entire packet network.
Global timing
GNSS encompasses four main satellite systems: GPS (the USA), GLONASS (Russia), BeiDou (China), and Galileo (Europe). Network operators exploit the whole of this GNSS grid as a source for Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the primary standard for worldwide clock synchronization. IEEE 1588 PTP grandmaster clocks on the ground then use this highly accurate timing source to deliver precise phase and time information across the entire packet network, thereby ensuring efficient, uninterrupted service delivery. There are times, however, when GNSS signals are lost or interrupted, and so GNSS receivers need to have redundancy protections and long holdover capacity built-in to compensate.
